Dr. Cheng Ning LOONG

  • 2022 / 23  RGC Postdoctoral Fellow
  • The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
  • Junior Member

Biography

Dr. Loong is a postdoctoral fellow at HKUST. His interdisciplinary research covers fractal mechanics, structural and earthquake engineering, and engineering education. His work characterizes the intricate relationship between the self-similar architecture of fractal structures and their mechanical behaviour. Dr. Loong's contributions include the first mathematical proof for the existence of modal self-similarity in fractal trees, which prevents their trunks and lower-order branches from vibrating. His work elucidates why proteins with triangular-fractal structures are stable at low fractal levels but rarely exist at high levels. These studies advance our understanding of fractal mechanics and offer bio-mimicked design lessons for man-made structures or materials.
